It is probably safe to assume that most of us are eagerly anticipating the arrival of 2021. To put it lightly, this year has been nothing short of a nightmare. From a global pandemic that has shut down numerous local businesses and forced social isolation and financial insecurity to an ongoing state of social unrest, many of us have truly been through the ringer. Of course, some of us are far worse off than others. Financial insecurity and job insecurity rates have both spiked as a result of nationwide lockdowns and the cyclical closing and reopening of many businesses. There is no question that as the holiday season quickly approaches, many individuals and families are left wondering how they will make ends meet and carry on with some sense of normalcy intact. Many families are wondering how they are going to put food on the table this Thanksgiving. For this reason, CuraWest is participating in an annual Thanksgiving food drive by donating canned goods and other non-perishable items to one of several local charities throughout the state of Colorado.

Every year, we encourage our employees and staff members to bring in as much canned food as they possibly can, and we donate this food to a local charity. Join us for this year’s Thanksgiving food drive by donating food to one of the charities listed below or directly to us, and we will transport all donations to the charity before Thanksgiving. more than ever before, it is extremely important to donate to charities geared towards helping less fortunate members of society so that they can enjoy the holiday season the way we are all meant to and the way we all deserve to.

Food Insecurity in Colorado

Hunger and poverty are major public health issues throughout the state of Colorado. Hunger Free Colorado reports that nearly one in three Coloradans struggle with hunger, and do not always have enough money to buy food. Nearly one out of every 8 kids in Colorado does not know how or when they will get their next meal. Additionally, one out of every 30 older adults in Colorado face hunger on a daily basis, which forces them to make difficult decisions like choosing between putting food on the table or obtaining the medications they might need for pre-existing health conditions. Well, one out of every 12 Colorado residents currently uses government issued food stamps, not all residents no about the food related resources that are readily available to them. Not only does CuraWest work to donate food to local charities, in turn helping individuals and families in need, but we strive to bring awareness to the resources that are available throughout the state.

Substance Abuse & The Need For Food

There is also a very close correlation between food insecurity and substance abuse and dependency. Not knowing how or when the next meal will be on the table leads to extremely high stress levels, especially when a man or woman is attempting to support a family. High stress levels lead to substance abuse, and substance abuse makes it exceedingly more difficult to support a family. It is a vicious cycle that must be addressed at the root of the problem. CuraWest works very closely with Colorado residents who have been struggling with substance abuse and who have been unable to adequately support themselves and their dependents. We offer a wide range of services and resources, including vocational training, budgeting and a variety of other vital life skills as part of our comprehensive medically monitored detox program.

The Importance of Giving Back

Not only does giving back to the local community help community members in need, but participating in annual charity events continuously reminds our staff members and our clients of where they have come from and how much progress they have made. This helps them foster a sense of gratitude, one that is crucial to the maintenance of long-term sobriety. Additionally, charitable work is part of the backbone of every effective recovery program. for more information on the importance of giving back feel free to reach out to us at any point in time.
